Be Prepared for the Unexpected: Managing Medical Emergencies in the Therapy Room. As a counsellor or therapist, you’re trained to handle emotional crises but what happens if a client has a seizure, faints, or experiences a heart attack during a session? This CPD course gives you the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond calmly and effectively if the unthinkable happens. Many counsellors and therapists admit they would feel unprepared or overwhelmed if a medical emergency happened during a session. The truth is, emergencies do occur - from panic attacks and fainting to seizures or allergic reactions. Without the right training, these moments can feel frightening and leave you unsure of what to do. This course bridges that gap, giving you practical tools to manage medical emergencies while protecting your clients, your professional boundaries, and yourself. What You'll Learn By the end of this course, you will be able to: Take the right steps if you or your client become suddenly unwell, including when and how to call emergency services. Understand how medications (e.g., antidepressants, antipsychotics, painkillers) can affect therapy sessions. Use the recovery position and CPR appropriately and confidently. Apply ethical and legal frameworks (confidentiality, duty of care, safeguarding) in emergency situations. Create and use a therapist’s first aid kit - practical and emotional tools for crisis moments. Write contracts and complete risk assessments that include emergency planning, so clients know what to expect. Respond compassionately and professionally in rare but critical events, including client harm or even death. Who This Course is For This CPD course is designed for: Counsellors and psychotherapists in private practice. Trainees and newly qualified therapists wanting to build confidence. Supervisors and managers who support other practitioners. Any professional working in a therapeutic setting who may face unexpected health crises. You don’t need a medical background, this course is designed to be accessible, practical, and relevant to your work as a therapist.
